Self Tapping Screws

Self Tapping Screws

What are Self Tapping Screws?

Self Tapping Screws, often simply called 'self tappers', are part of Accu's extensive precision screws range. Self tapping screws are specially designed to create their own threads within a pre-drilled hole. (It is strongly recommend you use a pilot hole, if you are looking for a screw to create the hole itself try searching for 'self drilling screws'). Self Tapping Screws are available in a wide variety of head types, drive types and thread types which help maximize application performance depending on the material you will be screwing into.

What Is The Difference Between Self Tapping And Self Drilling Screws?

In layman terms, tapping means creating a thread. Tapping is not the act of creating a hole. In soft materials, such as softwood or non-rigid plastic, there is some overlap in these processes, as a self tapping screw tip is usually sufficient to create the hole required. With metals or hardwoods, a pilot hole must be drilled before a thread can be tapped. Failure to do so has a high chance of causing cracks in the base material.

Self Tapping Screws For Plastic

Certain types of self-tapping screw have been specially designed for use with plastics such as PLA (commonly used in 3d printing), HDPE, LDPE, PS, polycarbonate, PVC, PETG, Nylon & ABS. While regular self tapping screws are suitable for use with most soft plastics, there is an increased likelihood of cracking the base plastic particularly when the material is very stiff (e.g. polycarbonate, PLA).  Plastite screws feature more pronounced, sharper threads, which cause less stress when inserting the screw and mean increased resistance to pull-out and stripping within low-density plastics.

Thread Types

B Type Threads

AB threads are the most common Self Tapping Screw within Accu's range. An AB Type thread is characterised by its spaced threads and sharply pointed tip, sometimes called a gimlet point. The tip of these fasteners aids the self-tapping characteristics of the screw, making AB self tappers highly versatile and suitable for most applications.

B Type Threads

B threads, previously known as type Z threads, are self-tapping threads with a blunt tip. This type of self tapping fastener is generally used in conjunction with blind holes, or in applications where sharp components are unsuitable.
